Choosing a wedding photographer is one of the few wedding decisions you can’t undo after the fact — you can rebook a florist next year, but you only get one set of photos from your wedding day. Here’s what actually matters when you’re comparing photographers.
Look at full galleries, not just highlight reels
Instagram and portfolio pages show the best 20 photos from a wedding. Ask to see a full gallery from a recent wedding — ideally one with similar lighting conditions to your venue (indoor reception, outdoor ceremony, etc.). Consistency across a full day tells you far more than a curated highlight reel.
Ask who will actually be there on the day
Some photographers work solo; others send a team. Neither is wrong, but you should know which one you’re booking. A team-based studio can usually offer a second shooter, drone coverage, and faster turnaround because editing isn’t bottlenecked through one person — but you want to confirm exactly who will be on-site and how many.
Understand what’s actually included
Package pricing varies a lot, so get specific about what’s in the number: hours of coverage, number of images delivered, whether a photobook or prints are included, drone/aerial footage, and travel fees if your venue is outside the photographer’s usual area. Get it in writing before you book.
Check turnaround time
Ask when you’ll actually receive your photos, not just when they’ll start editing. Turnaround varies by season — a photographer shooting every weekend in peak wedding season will take longer than one in a quieter month.
Talk to them before you book
Style matters, but so does how a photographer works with people. Your wedding day involves hours with this person (or team) nearby, often during stressful moments. A short call or meeting before booking tells you a lot about whether their approach fits how you want your day to feel.
Confirm their coverage area
If your venue is a drive from the photographer’s base, ask directly whether they cover that area regularly or if it’s a special exception. A team that regularly shoots across a wider region will usually have a smoother process for travel logistics than a photographer taking on a one-off out-of-area booking.
